Frozen 2 stands as Disney Animation’s most successful film to date, amassing an impressive $1.45 billion at the global box office. Despite this success, it wasn’t until February 2023 that the official announcement for a third movie was made.
However, the wait for the next instalment in the franchise will be less prolonged. Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, recently revealed that Frozen 3 is currently in development. In an interview with Disney, Frozen director Jennifer Lee hinted at a more intricate connection between the next two movies, suggesting that the story might be too big to fit in one film.
About The Frozen Series
The Frozen franchise originated with the 2013 animated film of the same name, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. The screenplay was written by Jennifer Lee, with Peter Del Vecho as the producer, Christophe Beck composing the music score, and songs penned by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
John Lasseter, then the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, served as the film’s executive producer. Drawing inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Snow Queen,” the original film was released in November 2013.
Since its debut, the franchise has experienced rapid expansion. It now encompasses various Disney theme park attractions, merchandise, video games, books, a Disney on Ice show, a Broadway stage musical, and two short animated films. Additionally, Disney has produced an animated sequel and introduced a new book series as part of the Frozen universe.
What Happened in The First Two Parts?
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the Frozen movie series consisted of two films: “Frozen” (2013) and “Frozen II” (2019). The movies are animated musical fantasy films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.
Frozen (2013)
The first film tells the story of two royal sisters, Elsa and Anna, living in the kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa has magical ice powers that she struggles to control. After accidentally revealing her powers and plunging Arendelle into eternal winter, Elsa isolates herself.
Anna, along with an ice harvester named Kristoff, his loyal reindeer Sven, and a comical snowman named Olaf, embark on a journey to find Elsa and save their kingdom.
Frozen II (2019)
The sequel continues the story as Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf embark on a journey to discover the origin of Elsa’s powers and the secrets of their kingdom’s past. The film explores the history of Arendelle, Elsa and Anna’s parents and the enchanted forest. The characters encounter new challenges and face the mysteries of the enchanted forest to save their kingdom.
Both films received widespread acclaim for their animation, storytelling, and music. The song “Let It Go” from the first film, performed by Idina Menzel as Elsa, became particularly iconic and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The Frozen 3 Updates
In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Peter Del Vecho, the producer behind both of the initial Frozen movies and Disney’s most recent animated feature, Wish, shared his insights regarding the highly anticipated Frozen 3 film.
He conveyed that the studio only pursues sequels when they perceive a substantial narrative to explore. He expressed trust that the upcoming Frozen 3 would be extraordinary. Vecho stated that the studio only engages in sequels if they perceive sufficient narrative potential.
He mentioned that while they are actively developing Frozen 3, his current focus is on ‘Wish.’ Vecho expressed excitement about the ongoing work on Frozen 3, emphasising that any information circulating publicly is speculative. However, he conveyed his trust in the project, anticipating that it would be extraordinary.
What to Expect From The Third Instalment?
Given the recent brief statement, it appears Frozen 3 won’t be completed soon. Fans hope it’ll be worth the wait, speculating on potential plot directions. Some suggest exploring the elemental spirits’ lore, focusing more on Anna’s role as the kingdom’s leader.
Jennifer Lee hints at a two-part tale for Frozen 3 and 4, promising ample exploration of Arendelle. There’s speculation about a cliffhanger in the style of Avengers: Infinity War. Meanwhile, Disney Animation’s Wish is currently playing in theatres worldwide.
